The Halifax branch of the Latvian Welfare Fund bought its property in August 1963 for £2250. A three storey brick building in the centre of the town, it had previously been home to working women. In 1970 the land at the back of the building was acquired and a small function room built. The ground floor housed the club and hall, the second floor the library, kitchens and weekend school, and the third was residential. In 1977, the branch bought land in the local graveyard for 25 graves, paying £900, later extending the plot to contain 80 graves. On 11 November 1979 a white marble memorial stone was inaugurated containing two inscriptions, one – “God bless Latvia”, the other – “In memory of Latvians who have died in exile in Halifax”. The building was sold in 2007.
